The World Baseball Classic (WBC) championship is over, but the legacy of South Korean team manager Kim In-sik's outperforming leadership continues to inspire political leaders to do the same.

President Lee Myung-bak singled out the Korean team's patriotism and honor as two winning factors that paved the way for the Korean team's showdown with Japan in the championship final.

Korea won the silver medal as it lost 5-3 in the match Tuesday, which was their best performance in a WBC series.

``Kim encouraged his players to unite and do their best under the slogan of putting the country first, and the players faithfully fulfilled their duties,'' Lee said in a Cabinet meeting.

The President was referring to manager Kim's widely cited remark made shortly after he accepted the offer to lead the team.

Before Kim, two managers of professional baseball teams, Kim Kyung-moon of Doosan Bears and Kim Sung-keun of SK Wyverns, were reportedly called upon to meet the demanding job, but both rejected it for personal reasons.

The two did not take the call because they wanted to focus on leading their own baseball teams the next season, sources at the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) said.

In his acceptance remarks, Kim, who suffered a stroke in 2004 and announced he wouldn't lead the Korean team again after the WBC championship in 2006, said players and managers should put the country first, ahead of their teams, adding that baseball teams would not be there unless fans chant for and support them.

After winning the silver medal in the WBC championship, Kim said, ``We did our best. Of course, it would have been better if we'd won, but I don't have great dissatisfaction.''

``Our players did very well and I just want to thank them for it,'' he said at a news conference following the final at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Ko Jin-hyun, a sports writer of a local daily newspaper who is the author of a book titled ``Kim In-sik's Leadership: Six Golden Principles for a Baseball Manager,'' observed that Kim's leadership was all about trust.

``Kim empowers his players with an unlimited level of trust so that they can discover and use their strengths in full during games, and this is the essence of his leadership,'' Ko stated in the book, published in 2006.

``Kim's trust-based leadership enables his players to build a strong sense of loyalty to the manager, leading them to be self-motivated and goal-oriented. This makes a clear distinction between his leadership and that of other managers, as the latter tend to put an emphasis on fixing their players' weaknesses,'' he said.

Despite the loss in the final match with Japan, politicians lauded Kim and his team for their extraordinary performance, being focused, well-coordinated and their undying spirit to the last minute of the championship.

The governing Grand National Party (GNP) praised the team for leading Koreans to see a glimpse of hope at a time of a deepening economic slump, saying it looked forward to the country linking the positive signs to prosperity in the future.

Calling the Korean team's performance an unforgettable drama that touched many people, the GNP said Kim's ``putting the country first'' mindset paid off.

The minor opposition Liberty Forward Party, meanwhile, said Kim's merit-based human resources management led to his team's stellar accomplishment, urging President Lee to learn lessons from Kim's leadership.
